Whenever someone asks me where I’m from, I’ve learned to respond by saying Huntington, West Virginia. I don’t think I’ve met someone who doesn’t know where Huntington is. I was born in Huntington, yes, but I’m not technically from there. If I say I’m from South Point, Ohio, the next question is always "Where?" Then I have to explain South Point’s location in relation to Huntington (most southern point of Ohio, just across from Huntington and Ashland, KY). It’s just easier to say Huntington. Saying I’m from Huntington doesn’t confuse others when they hear my
accent. Most people look at me crazy if I say I’m from Ohio, saying
West Virgina makes so much more sense.
Shots of home…
In the far distance of the bottom picture, you can see the bridge crossing over into downtown Huntington. I was standing on the banks of the Ohio River looking into West Virginia.
So, I grew up in Ohio and went to school in Ohio, but everything else is in West Virginia (mall, hospitals, movies, restaurants). Hell, our high school prom was held in Huntington every year. I think we’re (my sisters and I) the first in our family to live our whole lives in Ohio. I may be from Ohio technically, but I’m FROM West Virginia. Make sense?
