With my first post, I’m going to tell you about my long and storied knitting career. Well, not really.
About 4 years ago, I was shopping in Meijer’s (like a Super WalMart) when I passed the crafts aisles. I stopped and turned around. I was intrigued. Why didn’t I think of this before? I’ve always wanted to try my hand at something crafty. My MawMaw crochets; I can knit! I bought a thing of yarn (now known as a skein) and some aluminum needles. I drove as fast as I could to the library and checked out a whole slew of books to teach myself. I got home and was soon casting on. I could cast on like a rock star. Woohoo, look at me! Then I tried to make my first stitch. And was a total and abject failure. No matter what I tried or how many books I read, I just couldn’t make a knit stitch. I tossed the yarn and needles away in disgust, but didn’t throw them out. They sat gathering dust for the next 4 years.
Fast forward to May 2004…
I’m at Barnes & Noble, my second home. I walk past a prominent display of Debbie Stoller’s Stitch ‘n Bitch books. I flip through, I’m curious, I put it down and go on my merry way. A couple of weeks later, back at B&N, I pick it up. I buy it. Soon I’m casting on like my old rock star self. And now for the moment of truth, I try to make a knit stitch. I fail. I try again. I fail. I try again. Wait, what’s that? Holy crap, it’s a knit stitch. I do it again. And again and again. Before you know it, I have whole rows of garter stitch. Check me out…I can purl, too! So now I have two FO and 3 WIP. Pretty good for a beginner if I do say so myself. My WIP are a little more complicated than scarves (my 2 FO). I pick projects that try my skills, but aren’t too complicated so that I get frustrated and give up. The more difficult projects I can do, the more confidence I have in my knitting.
So stay tuned for more of my adventures with Sharp Pointy Sticks!
