Every day in Liam's backpack we get a little report of how the day went. Who he played with, what the snack was, what activities he did, what therapies he got. On Thursdays (the end of the preschool week), we get a little newsletter highlighting the class activities and how each day's curriculum addressed early content learning standards. The little newsletter also has pictures of the kids doing various activities from the week. I don't know if this is a standard in our school or is common elsewhere, but I love this little newsletter and the pictures.
Just to give you an idea, here's this week's report:
After reading a story about an underwater camera last week, the students couldn't believe that a camera could really go underwater. On Monday, a large tub was filled with water and an underwater disposable camera was used to take pictures of items placed into the tub of water. The children really enjoyed this activity! Tuesday, pictures were taken outside on the playground and the children put these pictures into their photo albums. A photo gallery of the children's pictures has been put up in the classroom. We are going to add to it as the investigation continues. People who have come into the room can't believe that these pictures have been taken by preschoolers. They have some great skill! On Thursday, we started to make decorations for the Valentine's Dance on Monday. Hope all of you can join!
Early Learning Content Standards:
Monday: Show interest in investigating unfamiliar objects, organisms, and phenomena during conversations and play
Tuesday: Demonstrate and use terms related to location, direction, and distance (up, down, over, under, front, back)
Wednesday: Identify characters in favorite books and stories
Thursday: Represent ideas through multiple forms of language and expression
So. That's what Liam did at preschool this week. There is a picture of him in the newsletter bending over the tub of water with the underwater camera. He's included in these activities. Really truly included. I have pictures for proof. By the way, Tuesday's early learning standard is one of Liam's IEP goals. I guess one of these days I should mention what those goals are.
I am really pleased with his teacher and the school. He's making friends. He went on a play date today! He likes school. He likes his teacher. This is so very, very good.
